Road Accidents in Mauritius

Until today I really was not keen on blogging. But a fatal accident that happened today morning really made me feel like speaking out my thoughts. Its mealy 1 year since I met with a serious accident on the same road, myself.

Right around 7 AM sirens started howling all over Quatre Borne. I thought to myself it must be the usual fancy display put up by the local fire brigade.

Later when called my taxi, I learnt that there has been a fatal accident on the motor way which connects the Islands capital to the central plains where I live. I could see from my balcony, the whole traffic had come to a standstill. It took couple of hours for the traffic to start moving again.

Being impatient to get to work, we joined the slow moving traffic and Imran (my good old taxi driver) did the Creole translation of the news aired on the radio.

A speeding truck carrying sugar, had hit a bus. The impact was so severe that it made the bus tumble before it came to a stand still!

(I always thought that Buses were the safest way to travel...)

Later as we reached Pailles the catastrophe was unfold:

Just couldn't imagine how much of an impact this chunk of steel must have felt, to make it topple like this.
The toppled bus:

What must have gone through the passengers of this bus. They might have not had a clue as to what happened to them.

Heard that 5 people died and more than 20 were seriously injured.

The stock of sugar lays on the ground...

The remains of the sugar truck lies aside of the road as it shocks the observers...

The truck was speeding so fast that brakes didn't answer when applied.

If I'm not mistaken during the past two years this is the fourth truck that met with an accident. But this was the most deadliest of them all, I think.

The anxiety to save couple of minutes brought about a catastrophe to many families today...

There seems to be a waive of accidents started again. After I blogged yesterday on this topic, on my way home I heard that a Defender has toppled on the same road! Today morning a hit and run incident was reported on the east, in the Flaq region. It as if more incidents should be expected.
